How Does an Online Police Check Compare to an In-Person Check?

At Triton, online police checks are conducted using the same data as if you were to visit your local police station.

We have relationships and agreements with the RCMP and local police forces across the country. When you send us your information, we forward it to one of our police partners who then runs it through the RCMP’s database of criminal records.

This makes the online police check must faster. An in-person criminal background check can take anywhere from days to weeks to receive results, but online check results are available within the hour.

However, certain criminal record checks must be completed in-person, such as a Vulnerable Sector Check.

What is Included in an Online Police Check?

An online police check searches through national and local databases to find a history of criminal offence convictions.

When you receive an online police check from Triton, you get an official document that can be presented to your employer or volunteer organization.

What is the Turnaround Time?

The exact turnaround time for an online police check can depend on where you get that check.

We can only speak to ours at Triton. Our criminal record checks are completed in under 15 minutes between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Turnaround times are also dependent on receiving complete paperwork.

Why Do I Need a Police Background Check?

Police background checks can be requested for a number of reasons, including:

· As part of a job application process.

· For a volunteer position.

· For chaperoning a school trip or volunteering in a classroom.

· For some post-secondary programs of study.

· For receiving a professional license, such as a real estate license.

While some organizations conduct a background check with your permission, others put the onus on you to provide the check results.

How Do I Get Started?

To complete an online criminal record check, you will need:

· Your full name

· Your birth date and details

· Your full contact information

· Addresses for the past five years

· Whether you have ever been convicted of a criminal offence

· Access to a computer or smartphone

· Internet access

· Email address

· Payment information

This information can be entered online securely at www.tritoncanada.ca/personal.

After you enter the personal information, you will be directed to agree to the Terms & Services, then to enter payment details and answer a security question. The results are then sent to you via email!
