The whole process may be a little confusing or even intimidating. Below we break down typical timelines and explain how to ensure you receive results quickly, securely and in full compliance with Canadian regulations.

Why do I need a criminal record check?

There are several reasons why you may need a criminal record check in Canada.

Job Seekers: Many employers require a criminal record check as part of their pre-employment screening process. This is especially common in roles with financial responsibility, positions of trust or some regulated industries.

Volunteers: Volunteer organizations often require screening to help ensure the safety of the communities they serve. Some of these roles require a Vulnerable Sector Check if you are working with vulnerable individuals such as children or seniors.

Students or Licensing: Some school programs or professional regulatory bodies require a criminal record check before approving placements, certifications or licenses. This can help you confirm eligibility or secure your position.

Personal Reasons: Sometimes you’re just curious! Some people may want to confirm what appears on their record for their own peace of mind.

Processing times may vary depending on the level of screening requested.

CRJMCs are commonly requested for roles such as security guards, financial services employees, healthcare workers, etc.
  3. Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) – Level 3: This check must be run by the local police service where the applicant resides. Includes criminal record and judicial matters plus check of the pardons database, list of restricted persons for vulnerable care, work.
