The Most Important Emerging HR Trends

September 14 2022

A recent report from S&P Global Market Intelligence on emerging HR trends clearly shows the impact remote work and an increasingly digitalized economy are having on workplace environments. Employee engagement software like tracking goals, sending pulse surveys, and measuring sentiment are all top priorities.

More specifically, according to most respondents, the key needs are:

  • Advanced analytics for employee sentiment
  • Strong privacy options
  • More automation
  • Better integration of performance management tools with other systems
  • More streamlined processes for sending pulse surveys

These priorities are reacting to what many respondents identified as one of the most significant challenges for HR over the next two years: supporting a more distributed workforce. The dynamics of remote and hybrid work are affecting work-life balance, employee retention, team building, burnout, and keeping teams focused.

Likewise, many HR leaders say they don’t feel confident they can meet these challenges due to a lack of resources. A related survey from The Hackett Group found that HR professionals are particularly worried about a decline in budgets coupled with a small increase in headcount while trying to address a workload increase of over 9 per cent.

Strategic investments in technology can help fill productivity gaps while remaining nimble.

What HR Trends Should You Be Investing In?

  • Applicant tracking systems

An applicant tracking system (ATS) automates the hiring process and helps HR teams efficiently manage every part of recruitment from job posting to onboarding. Not surprisingly, the global ATS market is poised to exceed USD 3 billion by 2027 with a compound annual growth rate of 7.1 per cent during the next five years.

Advances in cloud technology, the internet of things, serverless computing, and big data have helped decrease ATS costs. As such, companies are increasingly viewing ATS technology as an ideal solution for streamlining hiring processes while reducing costs.

  • The metaverse

Two-thirds of business leaders in a recent survey from Regus said the metaverse is the next stage of hybrid working because it will help reduce the need for staff to work from the same office. Employers believe this will create more diverse workplaces, improve mental health, reduce presenteeism, and improve relationships between remote and office-based staff.

That being said, many businesses are taking a wait-and-see approach with the metaverse before becoming early adopters. And while many employees believe the metaverse could improve communication, teamwork, and remote work opportunities, they’re also concerned employers will use it to collect their data and monitor them.

For the time being, it may be wise for businesses and HR teams to try small experiments with the metaverse before making major commitments.
